This term our topic is:
What Do We Know About The Victorians And The Way They Lived?
In Year 2 this half-term, we will be exploring the question 'what do we know about the Victorians and the way they lived?' We will be learning what life was like, including our local area, in Victorian times and compare it to our lives today. We will be learning about the artist LS Lowry and will have a go at creating our own artwork in his style.
During our History focussed topic, we will be focussing on the following questions:
What do you know about the Victorians?
What would it have been like to have gone to school in the time of the Victorians?
What jobs did Victorian children have to do and what sort of childhood did they have?
What do you think you would have been doing on Saturdays and Sundays 150 years ago?
How would you recreate some of LS Lowry’s paintings?
In English, we will be reading the book Major Glad, Major Dizzy by Jan Oke. We will write our own thought bubbles for the characters, predicting what will happen next and then write what we think will happen next after the story.
In RE we will be learning more about different leaders and our PSHE focus is 'me and my relationships'.
We hope that your child enjoys being in our Year 2 Goldfinches class!

Reading is an essential part of your child's learning. Your child will be sent home with a colour banded book to match their ability. They will have a guided reading session every week, which will include shared reading, and accompanying tasks. Please take time to look at and read your child's reading books and any other books, with them. When you have read with your child please record this in their reading record. If a child reads 3 or more times at home each week, they will be entered into our 'In It, To Win It' draw to be in with a chance of choosing a golden envelope to win a prize!
The children continue to have access to Bug Club online, where reading books will be allocated to each child. When they access the books there will be short tasks which they need to complete in order to win points. The more points they win the more time they get to spend it in the shop.
P.E. will take place on a Monday. Please ensure that your child comes to school on this day in their P.E. kit. They will stay in their P.E. kit all day and where possible, P.E. will take place outside so please make sure children are dressed to keep warm. Please also remember that children need to have their hair up in a pony-tail and to remove earrings and other jewellery for P.E. If your child has newly pierced ears please pop in to the office to fill in the appropriate form.
Could we ask that you help your child practise their spellings, which will be checked weekly. We expect your child to begin to use these words in their writing. Spellings can be practised in different ways such as writing them out using paint, or in sand or practising them with magnetic letters or making a game up with them. You can also look out for them when reading and when you’re out and about!
Please can you encourage your child to learn their times tables and their inverses at home. They have all received a log in for Times Tables Rock Stars and you will find this in their Reading Records.
Please log on to https://play.ttrockstars.com/auth to access their personal page.
