PSHE Including RSHE, British Values, Mental Health And Anti-Bullying

PSHE Curriculum – SCARF

At Brinsley Primary School we use SCARF, a comprehensive scheme of work for PSHE and Wellbeing education. It covers all of the DfE’s statutory requirements for Relationships Education and Health Education. It also covers the learning opportunities within the PSHE Association’s Programme of Study, therefore providing for elements such as the rights of the child, caring for the environment, economic education, and children’s social, moral, spiritual and cultural (SMSC) education, including British Values, which are statutory requirements.

The SCARF programme divides the year into 6 themed units:

1. Me and My Relationships: includes content on feelings, emotions, conflict resolution and friendships.

2. Valuing Difference: a focus on respectful relationships and British values.

3. Keeping Myself Safe: looking at keeping ourselves healthy and safe.

4. Rights and Respect: learning about money, living the wider world and the environment.

5. Being My Best: developing skills in keeping healthy, developing a growth mindset (resilience), goal-setting and achievement.

6. Growing and Changing: finding out about the human body, the changes that take place from birth to old age and being safe.

Mental Health & Wellbeing

At Brinsley Primary and Nursery School, we aim to promote positive mental health and wellbeing for our whole school community (children, staff, parents and carers), and recognise how important mental health and emotional wellbeing is to our lives in just the same way as physical health. We recognise that children’s mental health is a crucial factor in their overall wellbeing and can affect their learning and achievement. All children go through ups and downs during their school life and some face significant life events.

Our role in school is to ensure that children are able to manage times of change and stress, and that they are supported to reach their potential or access help when they need it. We also have a role to ensure that children learn about what they can do to maintain positive mental health and where they can go if they need help and support.

Our aim is to help develop the protective factors, which build resilience to mental health problems and to be a school where:

  • All children are valued.
  • Children have a sense of belonging and feel safe.
  • Children feel able to talk openly with trusted adults about their problems without feeling any stigma.
  • Positive mental health is promoted and valued.
  • Bullying is not tolerated.

Within our school community we:

  • Promote positive mental health and emotional wellbeing in all staff and students.
  • Increase understanding and awareness of common mental health issues.
  • Enable staff to identify and respond to early warning signs of mental ill health in students.
  • Enable staff to understand how and when to access support when working with young people with mental health issues.
  • Provide the right support to students with mental health issues, and know where to signpost them and their parents/carers for specific support.
  • Develop resilience amongst students and raise awareness of resilience building techniques.
  • Raise awareness amongst staff and gain recognition from SLT that staff may have mental health issues, and that they are supported in relation to looking after their wellbeing; instilling a culture of staff and student welfare where everyone is aware of signs and symptoms with effective signposting underpinned by behaviour and welfare around school.

British Values

We aim to actively promote British values in schools to ensure young people leave school prepared for life in modern Britain. Pupils are encouraged to regard people of all faiths, races and cultures with respect and tolerance and understand that while different people may hold different views about what is ‘right’ and ‘wrong’, all people living in England are subject to its law.

Our British Values are:

  • Democracy.
  • Rule of law.
  • Individual liberty.
  • Mutual respect.
  • Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs.

Anti-Bullying

At Brinsley Primary and Nursery School, we aim to provide a supportive, caring, and friendly environment which allows all our pupils to learn in an atmosphere which is focussed on improving their life chances and helping them to maximise their potential. We expect our pupils to act safely, and feel safe, in and outside of school – we do not tolerate any form of bullying and we are committed to preventing and tackling it. We recognise that as children learn and grow together, they may experience fallouts with their peers, but we are committed to supporting our pupils to resolve these ‘relational conflicts’ and stop them from progressing to bullying behaviours.

If an incident of bullying does occur, we believe our pupils, parents/carers and staff should feel confident in reporting it and know that that all incidents will be dealt with promptly and effectively. Please speak to your child’s class teacher if you have any concerns.

Bullying will never be tolerated at our school.

Enrichment

Enriching our curriculum for our children is very important to us. All children at Brinsley Primary and Nursery School have regular opportunities to participate in wellbeing activities.

Whole school, key stage and class assemblies maximises children’s thinking and understanding, whilst providing further opportunities to enhance further skills and knowledge linked to PSHE, RSE, Citizenship, British Values and SMSC. We use ‘Picture news’ for some of our whole school assemblies, where children discuss and debate current affairs.

In addition, the PSHE curriculum will be supplemented and enhanced by visiting speakers, outside providers and workshops. Dedicated events such as Hello Yellow Day, Anti-Bullying week, Children’s Mental Health week, Road Safety Day, E-safety Day etc., will serve to reinforce learning and raise awareness of specific issues. These are reviewed and updated regularly to reflect the current needs of pupils, the local community and globally. Our displays throughout school reinforce our PSHE curriculum enabling children to make links.
