Welcome to Year Three!
Year Three is an exciting time as we embark on our Key Stage 2 journey, where children will become more independent and responsible learners. Together, we will explore a variety of subjects and have lots of fun along the way!
Our Curriculum this Half Term
History: Ancient Greece
Our main topic will be History, where we will explore the daily lives of the ancient Greeks and investigate how the modern world has been impacted by ancient Greek culture.
Maths: Place value & Additional and Subtraction
In Maths, we will concentrate on several key areas:
- Place Value: exploring numbers to 1000.
- Addition and Subtraction: adding and subtracting 2 and 3-digit numbers up to and across 100.
Science: Forces and Magnets
Children will be learning to think like scientists as they carry out a range of practical activities that explore a range of forces, experimenting with friction, and developing an understanding of magnets. The children will be carrying out investigations into both areas and learning to present data in a variety of ways.
D&T: Pneumatic Toys
In D&T, we will be creating Pneumatic Toys. Students will have the opportunity to design and create a toy that feature a mechanism controlled by air.
Computing: Online Safety
During our Computing lessons, we will investigate Online Safety. This topic will help students understand how to keep personal information private and learn methods of how to keep safe whilst online.
PSHE: Me and My Relationships
In PSHE, children will explore the theme of Me and My Relationships. We will discuss how to understand our emotions and the feelings of others, how to work collaboratively as a team, and how to resolve friendship issues.
English: Narratives and Non-Chronological reports
In English, we will be writing a narrative inspired by Greek Myths. We will explore a range of traditional Greek tales and use descriptive language to retell stories and develop our voices as authors. We will also be writing a non-chronological report on a variety of Ancient Greek Gods and Monsters.
Important Information
PE will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Children are encouraged to come to school in their PE kit and remember to cover or remove earrings on these days for safety.
To support the development of reading skills, children are expected to read at home at least three times a week and record this in their reading diaries. This practice does not have to be done by an adult; children are encouraged to build independent reading practices.
Spellings will be distributed on Fridays for children to practice at home over the week. These will also be made available on Class Dojo.
We also use Times Tables Rockstars to practise multiplication skills, and regular practice is encouraged to help children become confident in their times tables.
Stay Connected
I am available for any questions or concerns via Class Dojo, so please feel free to reach out. I look forward to a fantastic year ahead filled with learning, growth, and fun!
Thank you for visiting our Year Three class page! Let’s make this a memorable year together!
Should you wish to access additional work, we recommend the following sites:

Reading
Your child will bring home a book banded book in addition to a library book. The book banded book gives you an indication as to where your child is in terms of age related. By the end of Year 3, ideally your child will be on ‘brown’ book band. The children do not need to wait to be told to change their books, they may do so when they see fit.
P.E.
PE will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Children are encouraged to come to school in their PE kit and remember to cover or remove earrings on these days for safety.
Times Tables
Every child in Years 2-6 have their own Times Tables Rock Stars log in which can be accessed below:
It is recommended that they take a little and often approach, aiming for 3-4 minutes, 5 times a week. The children will be rewarded with certificates- if they earn them- every Thursday. In order to move up to a new Rock Status, they need to play on ‘Studio’. After every 10 games, a new average score will be calculated which may lead to a change in their status.
Homework
In KS2, children will be asked to complete the following pieces of homework on a weekly basis:
- Times Tables Rock Stars (3-4 mins per day)
- Read at least 3 times a week
- Spellings once a week
In addition to the above, you may be asked to complete topic-based homework such as a piece of art or conduct some research at home. When this happens, your class teacher will post instructions via the class Dojo page.
