Welcome to Year 2
We hope that your child enjoys being in our Year 2 Goldfinches class!
This half term our topic is all about Kenya.
We’ll be researching to find the answer to the question ‘Where would you prefer to live: England or Kenya?’
Our focus text is ‘Lila and the Secret of Rain’ by David Conway and Jude Daly.
During the build up to our longer pieces of writing, we will be describing Lila’s jobs using adverbs, writing speech and thought bubbles, researching how to save water and looking how the author uses language to show the rain is coming. We will also be researching Kenya and writing non-chronological reports and African animal poems.
In Maths, we will be looking at Money and Multiplication and Division.
In DT and Science, we will be looking at a balanced diet and thinking about how 5 a day keeps us healthy.
In Computing, we will be learning about word processing.
In Music, we will be finding out about and interpreting African music.
In Geography, we will be comparing England with Kenya, as well as naming the continents and oceans.
In PSHE we are learning about keeping safe, and in RE our topic is ‘Believing’.
Remember to check Class Dojo regularly for updates, photos and information.
Helpful Websites To Use At Home
Reading
Reading is an essential part of your child’s learning. Your child will be sent home with a colour banded book to match their ability. They will have a guided reading session every week, which will include shared reading, and accompanying tasks. Please take time to look at and read your child’s reading books and any other books, with them. When you have read with your child please record this in their reading record. If a child reads 3 or more times at home each week, they will be entered into our ‘In It, To Win It‘ draw to be in with a chance of choosing a prize!
Homework
Could we ask that you help your child practise their spellings, which will be checked weekly. We expect your child to begin to use these words in their writing. Spellings can be practised in different ways such as writing them out using paint, or in sand or practising them with magnetic letters or making a game up with them. You can also look out for them when reading and when you’re out and about!
Times Tables
Please can you encourage your child to learn their times tables and their inverses at home. They have all received a log in for Times Tables Rock Stars and you will find this in their Reading Records. To access their personal page, please visit:
P.E.
P.E. will take place on a Tuesday and Thursday. Please ensure that your child comes to school on this day in their P.E. kit. They will stay in their P.E. kit all day and where possible, P.E. will take place outside so please make sure children are dressed to keep warm. Please also remember that children need to have their hair up in a pony-tail and to remove earrings and other jewellery for P.E. If your child has newly pierced ears please pop in to the office to fill in the appropriate form.
